What do we do?
The Communication Studio works with people of all ages to help them improve their communication skills. We have a special interest in practical communication skills and understand that the results of standard language tests do not always reflect the real communication of a person in their daily life. Many of our clients are neurodivergent, have mental health challenges, and/or have experienced trauma in the past.
We are Autistic led, ND affirming, and trauma informed. It is important to us our clients are comfortable, safe and respected. We tend to do things a little differently here in the studio to make sure this happens. We promise to work with you, in ways that work for you (and us!), to help you reach your communication goals.
How do we do that?
Your first appointment with The Communication Studio is always an Exploration session. We will have 60 minutes together to explore who you are, your interests, needs, goals and priorities. We will also discuss what support looks like for you, answer as many questions as we can, and make a plan for your next steps.
After your session, you will receive a written plan for your next steps toward your communication goals.
You can then tell us if you would like to:
follow this plan,
make changes to the plan, or
do nothing.
What will my support plan look like?
Each plan is individual and made just for you. There are some things that are the same across all plans. Your plan will:
identify your goals/the reason why you attended speech pathology
outline how we can achieve these goals in a way that is meaningful to you.
When we consider how we will achieve your goals, we always consider what is important to you. Do you prefer direct teaching sessions? no appointments? Do you need resources and/or training? Do we need to complete some assessments first, or do we have enough information to get started on therapy.
Your plan may include:
online sessions,
a personalised 'therapy in a box' program,
referral to local/in person services,
training and support for you, or people around you (such as parents, teachers, carers)
assistive technology
more detailed assessments
Don't forget, when you get your plan, you can then tell us if you would like to:
follow this plan,
make changes to the plan, or
do nothing.
Sometimes things change, or just aren't the way we expect them to be. We can always adjust plans which aren't working the way we hoped.
What happens when I finish my plan?
When we finish your plan, we will meet again to review how things are going. We can decide together to:
create a new plan, or
take a break
